Microsoft office broken copy-and-paste functionality in multiple versions of Excel

Temporary Workarounds (Quickest Fixes)
If
you need to get work done immediately without modifying your system settings,
use these methods:

Use the
Cut-and-Undo Trick: Select your data, press Ctrl
+ X (Cut), immediately press Ctrl
+ Z (Undo) to return the data to its
place, and then navigate to your destination cell and press Ctrl
+ V (Paste).
·
Use Paste
Special: Instead of a standard paste, copy
your cells, right-click the destination cell, and choose Paste Special
(or press Ctrl + Alt + V). Select Formulas or Values to paste the
contents. Note: If your sheet uses conditional formatting, standard pasting
may still fail, making Paste Special your best alternative.

Install the Official Microsoft Fix (Excel 2016 MSI Users)
Microsoft
released an official patch (KB5002665) specifically to fix this
regression.
1.
Open your Windows Settings
> Update & Security > Windows Update.

Click Check for updates and
look for KB5002665.

Install the update and restart your
computer.

Roll Back the Buggy Update (Excel 2019 / 2021 / 2024 / 365)
If
you are on a newer version of Office (Click-to-Run) where the automatic patch
isn't fully active yet, you can manually roll back your Office version to a
stable August 2026 build.
1.
Click the Windows Start menu, type cmd, right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as
administrator.

Copy and paste the specific command
for your version below into the Command Prompt window, then press Enter:
o For Office 2019:

General Troubleshooting (If the update isn't the cause)
If
your issue started before September 2026 or is isolated to a single file, try
these standard steps:

Clear the Excel
Clipboard: Go to the Home tab, click
the tiny arrow dialog launcher in the bottom right corner of the Clipboard
group, and click Clear All.
·
Disable Add-ins: Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
Change the dropdown at the bottom to COM Add-ins, click Go, and
uncheck active plugins to see if a third-party app (like Bloomberg Terminal or
browser extensions) is locking the clipboard.
·
Unmerge Cells: Excel cannot paste data if the target destination contains merged
cells that don't exactly match the size of the copied data. Select your
target area and click Merge & Center to unmerge them.
