On your Windows 10 computer, a 3rd party program (e.g., Epic Games) may throw the error that the module VCRUNTIME140.DLL, VCRUNTIME140_1.DLL, or MSVCP140.dll is missing from the computer. Here are the error messages which you may encounter:





Luckily this error is very common and it is very easy to resolve. Any file error starting with VCRUNTIME, or having MSVCP in its name, is related to Microsoft Visual C++. This redistributable package enables developers to develop specific applications. Sometimes, these support files are not included in the installation files of a specific application

For example, Dolphin.exe may trigger the VCRUNTIME140_1.dll error. But also Firefox users sometimes face the VCRUNTIME error.

In the past, I’ve written similar posts referring to errors with MSVCR110.dll and MSVCR120.dll.

Fix VCRUNTIME140_1.dll was not found

To fix the error for VCRUNTIME140_1.dll was not found, follow these steps:

  2. On the website, there are 3 versions: x86, x64 and ARM64. What you need depends on the application you are trying to run. But if unsure, just download both x86 and x64.

3. Install both files. Installing Visual C++ only involves agreeing to the license terms and clicking Install. Note: if you don’t see Install, but Repair, click Repair. Your Visual C++ installation may be damaged or corrupted.


4. Once you have installed Visual C++, try to run the application. It should now run fine.

5. Optional: You may delete the installation files. However, Do not uninstall Visual C++, as it will again cause errors. It’s best to leave all versions installed.

How to change group privacy settings in WhatsApp


Your WhatsApp group privacy setting is by default set to "Everyone," which the company says will help you easily connect with those who are not in your contacts list.

WhatsApp has always allowed anyone with your phone number to message you or add you to a group. This is similar to how anyone can send you an SMS message or email if they have your contact information.

By default, your group privacy settings are set to Everyone so you can easily connect with friends and family, even if they’re not in your contacts list.

For additional privacy, we’ve also added the ability to control who can add you to a group by adjusting your WhatsApp Settings.

Note: Changes to group privacy settings can’t be made on WhatsApp Web or Desktop, but the settings from your phone will be synced with WhatsApp Web and Desktop.

Change group privacy settings

  1. Go to WhatsApp Settings:
    • Android: Tap More options > Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
    • iPhone: Tap Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
    • KaiOS: Press Options > Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups.
  2. Select one of the following options:
    • Everyone: Everyone, including people outside of your phone's address book contacts, can add you to groups without your approval.
    • My Contacts: Only contacts in your phone's address book can add you to groups without your approval. If a group admin who's not in your phone's address book tries to add you to a group, they'll get a pop-up that says they can't add you and will be prompted to tap Invite to Group or press Continue, followed by the send button, to send a private group invite through an individual chat. You'll have three days to accept the invite before it expires.
    • My Contacts Except...: Only contacts in your phone’s address book, except those you exclude, can add you to groups without your approval. After selecting My Contacts Except… you can search for or select contacts to exclude. If a group admin you exclude tries to add you to a group, they’ll get a pop-up that says they can’t add you and will be prompted to tap Invite to Group followed by the send button to send a private group invite through an individual chat. You'll have three days to accept the invite before it expires.
  3. If prompted, tap DONE or press OK.

For added security, Windows 11 will forgo the older MBR partition scheme and use GPT instead. That may require users to convert their older hard drives. Here is how to do it.


Current users of Windows 10 who plan to update their operating systems to Windows 11 when it is released in October 2021 will first have to meet several non-negotiable and stringent prerequisites. For example, in its attempt to make Windows PCs more secure, Microsoft is requiring personal computers running Windows 11 to also use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface firmware installed on the motherboards.

To access the enhanced security features of UEFI, Windows 11 will forgo the older Master Boot Record (MBR) partition scheme and instead use the modern GUID Partition Table (GPT) scheme. If your Windows 10 computer is still using MBR, it will have to be converted to GPT before you will be allowed to update it to Windows 11.

Note: For many users with older computers, UEFI may not be installed on their motherboards at all, or if it is, the firmware may be too old to meet Microsoft's requirements. In either case, for those users, Windows 11 can never be installed, at least not conventionally.

How to convert MBR hard drive partitions to GPT

To determine if you have UEFI on your PC you will have to access the system software of your particular motherboard. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as standard motherboard system software; each manufacturer has its own. So, you will have to figure out how to access your system on your own. Generally, the technique involves pressing a specific key while the system is booting.

To determine if a hard drive is formatted using MBR or UEFI, right-click the Start Menu button and select Disk Management from the context list. On the Disk Management display, shown in Figure A, right-click on a hard drive petition, select Properties, and then select the Volumes tab. The type of formatting will be revealed.

Converting an MBR partition to a UEFI partition is accomplished with the help of a simple utility in Windows 10 called MBR2GPT.exe, which is accessed from the administrative command line. The important thing to note about this utility is that it will make the conversion without losing or overwriting any of your existing data. The MBR2GPT.exe utility requires Windows 10 version 1703 or better, so it may be beneficial run an update before running the utility.

Editor's note: TechRepublic has covered the operation and the benefits of the MBR2GPT.exe utility before, but we feel it is important to highlight the tool again because it may play an important role in your preparation for the roll out of Windows 11.

When you are ready to make the conversion, right-click the Start Menu button in Windows 10 and select the administrative command line from the context menu. Your choices are either Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), depending on how you have chosen your installation.

As a precaution, you should first validate that a conversion from MBR to GPT is feasible by entering this command at the prompt, as shown in Figure B. Note: Nothing will be changed with this command.

mbr2gpt.exe /validate /allowfullos


My hard drive is already GPT, so the validation failed, but you get the idea. If the utility returns "MBR2GPT: Validation completed successfully," then you know you are ready for the primary command, which is:

mbr2gpt.exe /convert /allowfullos

Assuming the conversion is completed successfully, you will have to reboot your computer, but when you do you must access the motherboard system software to change the boot partition setting from MBR to UEFI before Windows 10 starts its booting process.

Assuming you have met all the other Microsoft prerequisites for Windows 11, your newly converted GPT version of Windows 10 should now be ready for the October 2021 update to the next generation.

1. Enter Safe Mode and remove recently installed drivers

  1. Enter the BIOS and make sure that the first boot device is set to your USB drive.
  2. Place the Microsoft Windows 10 boot DVD into the CD/DVD drive.
  3. Reboot your Windows 10 operating system.
  4. When prompt by the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD please boot from the Windows 10 installation media CD by pressing any key on your keyboard.
  5. In the first window that appears after you booted from the Windows 10 bootable media you will need to left click or tap on the Next button.
  6. Left-click or tap on the Repair your computer option present in the next screen.
  7. From the Choose an option window that appears left click or tap on the Troubleshoot option.
  8. In the next window left-click or tap on the Advanced options.
  9. In the Advanced Options window left-click or tap on the Command Prompt option.
  10. Write in the black window (command prompt) the following: C: without the quotes. Press Enter to run the command.
  11. Next, you will need to write the following in the Command Prompt:BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY
  12. Write in the command prompt window the following: EXIT. Press the Enter key.
  13. Remove the Windows disc and restart your PC.

After doing that, you need to enter Safe Mode and remove any recently installed drivers. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. When the computer starts after the reboot keep pressing the F8 button on the keyboard.
  2. List of options will appear. Select Safe Mode from the menu.
  3. When Safe Modes starts, open Device Manager.
  4. Now uninstall the last drivers you installed recently by right clicking on them and and choosing the Uninstall device option.


5. Reboot the Windows 10 normally and see if you still have the blue screen with the same error message.

If the issue persists, you’ll have to remove another recently installed driver. Repeat this step until your PC start working again.

This is a simple solution, and it might help you fix Windows Driver Power State Failure error, so why not try it out.

Note: After you find the driver that is causing you this blue screen you should check on the manufacturer’s website for an updated version of it that is compatible with your Windows operating system in order to prevent the error Driver Power State Failure from appearing again.

2. Update your drivers

To fix the stop code Driver Power State Failure on your PC, it’s advised that you update your drivers. Doing so manually can be a hassle, but there are tools that can help you out.

Various errors are the result of a malfunctioning driver. When this is the case, you may need to update or reinstall completely this specific component.As the process is not straight-forward to complete, we recommend using an automated tool for the job. Here's how to do it:

  1. Download and install DriverFix.
  2. Launch the app.
  3. Wait for the software to detect all your faulty drivers.
  4. You will now be presented with a list of all the drivers that have issues, and you just need to select the ones you’d liked fixed.
  5. Wait for DriverFix to download and install the newest drivers.
  6. Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.


3. Perform an SFC scan

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and choose Command Prompt (Admin) from the list. If Command Prompt isn’t available, select PowerShell (Admin) instead.





  1. When Command Prompt opens, enter sfc /scannow and press Enter to run it.
  2. The scanning process will now start. Keep in mind that SFC scan can take about 10 minutes, so don’t interrupt it.

If you can’t run SFC scan, or if the scan can’t fix the problem, users are recommending to use DISM scan instead. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. Run the following commands:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /scanhealth
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  3. After running both commands, check if the problem is resolved.

If you were unable to run SFC scan before, be sure to run it after the DISM scan is completed. Once you run both scans, the problem should be completely resolved and the error message will stop appearing.

If you’re getting Driver Power State Failure message, you might be able to solve it by following the instructions mentioned above.

4. Change your Power settings

  1. Press Windows Key + S and enter control panel. Select Control Panel from the list


2. When Control Panel opens, locate and click on Power Options.


3. Click on Choose what the power button does.


4. Now click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.


5. Disable Turn off fast startup (recommended)Sleep and Hibernate options. Click on Save changes button.

Sometimes Driver Power State Failure can appear on Dell devices due to your power settings.

According to users, you might be able to fix this problem simply by disabling certain power settings like we showed you above.


5. Change your Power Plan Settings

  1. Navigate to Power options. Locate your currently selected plan and click on Change plan settings.

2. Click on Change advanced power settings.


3. Now you’ll see a list of settings. Open the Sleep section and make sure that Sleep and Hibernation are set to Never. In Power buttons and lid section make sure that everything is set to Do nothing. Now click on Apply and OK to save changes.


4. Optional: Set Graphics settings or PCI Express and Lnk State Power Management to Maximum Performance. Do the same for Wireless Adapter Settings.

If you’re using a laptop, users are recommending to remove its battery and to connecting it to the power outlet.

After making these changes, Sleep and Hibernate features will be completely disabled and the problem should be resolved.

If you use these features frequently, you should try a different solution.


6. Disable or remove your antivirus software

Antivirus software is rather important but sometimes your antivirus can interfere with Windows and cause Driver Power State Failure error to appear.

To fix this problem, we advise you to temporarily disable your antivirus software and check if that solves the issue. If not, you might have to uninstall your antivirus software completely.

Many antivirus companies offer removal tools for their software, so be sure to download one for your antivirus.

After you completely remove your antivirus, check if the issue still persists. If not, install the latest version of your antivirus software or switch to a different antivirus solution.

Many users reported problems with ***** antivirus, but other antivirus software can also cause this problem to appear.

7. Revert your graphics card drivers to the older version

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Navigate to Display adapters section and double click your graphics card.


3. When Properties window opens, go to the Driver tab and click on Roll Back Driver button.


4. Wait for the process to finish.

If Roll Back option isn’t available, you’ll need to uninstall your graphics card driver from Device Manager. Alternatively, you can use Display Driver Uninstaller to completely remove all files associated with your graphics card.

After you remove the driver, visit your graphics card manufacturer’s website and download the older version of the driver. After installing the driver, check if the problem is resolved.

This issue usually affects Nvidia graphics cards, but feel free to try this solution with other graphics cards as well.

Sometimes Stop code Driver Power State failure error can appear due to your graphics card drivers.

To fix this issue, it’s recommended to roll back to the older driver like we showed you before.

8. Change Power settings in Nvidia Control Panel

  1. Open Nvidia Control Panel.
  2. In the left pane, select Manage 3D settings.
  3. In the right pane, select your dedicated graphics card as Preferred graphics processor. Locate Power management mode in the list of settings and select Prefer maximum performance.
  4. Save changes and check if that solves your problem.

According to users, switching to maximum performance fixed this problem for them, so be sure to try it out.

This mode will use more battery power, so keep that in mind if you’re using a laptop. If you’re using AMD graphics, you can find similar settings in Catalyst Control Center.

According to users, Driver Power State Failure error can appear due to your power settings. This problem appears often while using Nvidia graphics, but you can fix it by following the steps above.


9. Change your device’s power options

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Locate your network adapter and double click it to open its properties.


3. Navigate to Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click on OK to save changes.


After doing that, the problem should be completely resolved. Keep in mind that your PC has multiple devices that support this feature, so you need to disable it for all problematic devices.
